After the Swiss, French and Italian names, it is the Indian names that hit the mark in the watchmaking world. Here are four “Made-in-India” luxury watch brands.
I have often wondered why India, with a heritage so rich in luxury jewelry and craftsmanship, has not yet ventured into the Far West of fine watchmaking. Of course we had Indian watch names like Titan and HMT which were standout brands at the time, but what if we still wanted that extra touch of modern opulence? Over the past few years, we have seen a handful of Indian houses making their mark in the world of watchmaking – striving to match the mechanical art of the Swiss, but always with Indian elegance. Here are three of our favorite Indian watch brands.
Indian watch brands: Made-in-India – Jaipur Watch Company, Bangalore Watch Company, Hopra
Jaipur Watch Company
If you surf the Jaipur Watch Company catalog, it is very evident that Indian culture and heritage are at the heart of their aesthetic. From the dial which houses a British Indian coin to hand-painted Indian art pieces, each dial is a canvas from the past, telling one story at a time. As the first bespoke watch company in India, they breathe tradition while being designed with contemporary watchmaking skills. This unique dial aesthetic comes from the founder, Gaurav Mehta, who has a penchant for historical relics and strives to tell stories of ancient India with his watches.
Bangalore Watch Company
Husband and wife duo, Nirupesh Joshi and Mercy Amalraj started a watch company in 2017 after quitting their respective tech jobs in Hong Kong. Nostalgia plays a key role in the history of the company. They choose to identify it by their hometown. It’s an ode to HMT watches, a famous watch brand from the 80s and 90s with which the founders grew up. In terms of aesthetics, the Bangalore Watch Company designs feature an alter ego of simply elegant dress watches and also sporty cricket and pilot inspired watches. All of this, with a “hint of India”. One of the best Indian watch brands today.
Horpa is the crossroads where sportiness, passion, affordability and elegance meet. They offer top-notch Swiss sports watch aesthetics, all made in-house. At the base are superb design, noble materials and excellent craftsmanship, take a look at their range, you will know what we are talking about. Their timepieces vary between Rs 11,000 and Rs 15,000. While the male range is predominantly sporty, the female range focuses on minimalism. The color scheme is a big theme here.
