Samuel Ross unveils the design of his Hublot Big Bang watch
Samuel Ross Brings a Polished Titanium Case and Orange Rubber Strap to the Hublot Big Bang Watch
After winning the inaugural Hublot Design Prize in 2019, creating a sculpture for the brand’s 40th anniversary, and Hublot’s ambassador ever since, British fashion designer Samuel Ross has reinvented the brand’s iconic Big Bang watch to bring a fresh perspective and a new visual language. in watchmaking. Issued in a limited edition of 50 pieces, the Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross features a satin-polished titanium case, a smooth rubber strap in Ross’ signature orange hue and an architectural honeycomb structure, making it a true piece of collection.
“Without a doubt, this watch is a brand new reinterpretation of the Big Bang Tourbillon seen through the eyes of Samuel Ross,” says Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot. ‘Together we were able to play with the codes of the watch, like the case, the titanium honeycomb mesh, the side bumpers that protect the case, and the rubber strap and present it in a new way. Hublot is delighted to participate in a project with a multidisciplinary artist like Samuel Ross, as it pushes our teams to be even more innovative in our ideas, materials, shapes and colors. We are very honored that Samuel Ross has trusted our production teams to convey his creative vision with our Big Bang.
Ross says: “Our design and development process began with a shared feeling – the possibility of what the future of watchmaking might look like, through a generation of engineers, collectors and aesthetes. The goal has always been rooted in conveying industrial beauty through a radical form supported by engineering.
In Ross’s hands, Hublot’s distinctive Big Bang case – a stylized hexagon – takes on added flair with a titanium honeycomb mesh used on the sapphire dial, caseback and bracelet. Considered one of nature’s fundamental building blocks, seen everywhere from beehives to snake scales, the sturdiness and efficiency of the honeycomb structure brings modernity and utility to the wristwatch while packing a punch. visual fist.
Ross says: “Hublot is industrial design in its purest form. [This design was inspired by] movement, acceleration, industrial beauty [that] reflect[s] our immediate surroundings. The city, the coarse materials and the colors that shape our global epicentres. Smudges of deeply saturated tones bring this matter and repeated highlights of color into a palette of universal, global melting pot awareness – this is where the prominence of our signature orange takes center stage.
Comfort and portability were also on Ross’s mind. The Samuel Ross Big Bang Tourbillon is intentionally lightweight and paired with a malleable rubber strap that can be changed if the wearer prefers a more subdued mood. Sporty orange, however, was specifically chosen for its energy and optimism, and adorns the tourbillon bridge and side bumpers of the watch – a stark contrast to the satin-brushed case and bezel.
Guadalupe concludes, ‘With [Samuel’s] incredible energy and unique design sensibility, we knew working together would bring a one-of-a-kind project to life. His charisma and creative vision brought out the best in our creative team at Hublot and I think you can see that in the Samuel Ross Big Bang Tourbillon. It’s really different and unique, and it’s also a great example of Samuel’s love for raw geometry, shape and design. §
